Community of Practice

Building a bridge between Summit for Action annual convenings, this community of practice is open to any alums of the Summit for Action series.  Together, we support each other, share problems of practice as well as progress, and brainstorm ideas/strategies to address all levels of change – individual, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic – needed for political, socioeconomic, and ecological transformation.
The purposes of the Summit for Action CoP are to:

  1. Cultivate meaningful relationships and co-create a support network;
  2. Learn, relearn, and apply the knowledge gleaned from the summit sessions and collaborations;
  3. Co-create opportunities to address problems of practice as well as amplify progress;
  4. Weave our efforts towards all levels of change – individual, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic; and
  5. Work together in solidarity and mutuality to build just relationships among participants.

These purposes are fulfilled through resource-sharing, quarterly meetings, learning pods, and community offerings.

2024-2025 Cohort Updates
The Community of Practice continues to be a space of joy, justice, and action. This year's cohort kicked off in January to deepen connection in shared hope. Members identified their legacy project and began brainstorming ideas for the end-of-cycle retreat in September. The CoP is excited to announce the launch of its 2025 project: a Zine-Style Toolkit for Tough Conversations around Environmental Justice. This collaborative project will blend storytelling, art, and accessible resources into a dynamic toolkit that helps people navigate challenging conversations around environmental justice, climate issues, and equity. The zine will be shared at the 2025 E.C.O.R. Summit for Action, in both digital and printed formats and will include:
  • Personal stories of injustice and resilience
  • Conversation frameworks and quick-reference tools
  • Poems, artwork, and how-to guides
  • Why EJ is at the root of every environmental cause
  • Examples from both U.S. and international contexts
We Need You!
This is your invitation to help bring this project to life. Whether you’re an artist, writer, editor, organizer, or supporter, we’d love your energy and creativity. We’re especially looking for folks to:
-Write or submit stories, poems, or reflection pieces
-Help review and edit submissions (grammar, flow, and equity lens)
-Share resources or create art and graphics
-Help promote and share the final toolkit

See the Submissions Guidelines for more details.

Past Highlights
The inaugural cohort consisted of 16 participants representing a variety of sectors including land management agencies, consultants, policy advocates, community organizers, elected officials, academic institutions, non-profit managers, researchers, parks and recreation professionals, zoo professionals, and environmental educators. Members met for two at-large meetings before moving into learning pods for the remainder of the cycle. Project-focused engagement was supplemented with community offerings to help forge trusting relationships among individuals and their associated organizations.

Building on the Summit’s 2022 theme, the 1991 Environmental Justice Principles, the CoP reflected, refined, and reimagined these principles as they apply to our present moment and near future.  Through collaboration and strategic guidance, this cohort developed two invaluable tools that will be presented to the community during the 2023 Summit for Action: the Environmental Justice Resource Database  and the Colorado Indigenous Action & Resource Guide.

In its second year, our community expanded to nearly 30 participants. We expanded our engagement opportunities, and members exchanged a Peer Learning series that included:
  • The Magic of Maps: a crash course in GIS & Equity
  • Narrative Design: Elevating Process as Product
  • Partnerships and Networking to Increase People Diversity

In addition to the series, participants have also connected through a variety of community offerings including:
  • Field Trips: Denver Zoo, Birdwatching, Bluff Lake Nature Center
  • Casual Meet-Ups: Virtual coffee/tea drop-ins, Buffalo Nichols free concert, Outside Festival
  • Peer Program Support: JeffCo Open Space Roll & Stroll, Boulder County Open Space & Harvest of All First Nations Corn Festival, Commerce City’s Environmental Justice Four Elements Celebration
  • Community Building: In-person retreat, Virtual Slumber Party, BIPOC Affinity Group in partnership with Next 100 Colorado Coalition

What CoP members have to say:

“This is something that helps fill my cup and invigorate me to do the work, thank you!”

“So thankful for this space and all of the people involved, it has helped me grow so much personally and professionally.”
